Reducing the risks
Cost-effective non-lead alternatives
We have acknowledged – based on the inputs of hunters and wildlife managers – that a constraint to reducing lead availability to wildlife has been and remains the lack of availability of lead-free ammunition in all calibres, and the price differential between lead and non-lead. We are determined to remove this constraint, including through supporting the growth of a local lead-free ammunition manufacturing capability.
We are also hopeful that current discussions in Europe regarding lead ammunition and fishing weights will translate into increased R&D for non-lead products, which will hopefully then become more available and at lower prices.
We are pleased to announce, that following a trial in partnership with SA Hunters and Badger ammunition, KZN Wildlife will be transitioning to using only lead-free ammunition for game management purposes.
To address the dual challenge of lead poisoning in humans and wildlife, transitioning to non-lead ammunition is imperative. This shift is not only feasible, but also essential for safeguarding public health and preserving the environment. Evidence from regions like North America and Europe demonstrates the effectiveness of non-lead alternatives, supporting the case for widespread adoption. Encouraging hunters and fishers to embrace non-lead ammunition is critical in this transition, requiring education and awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of such alternatives.
Fortunately, progress is being made in this regard, with initiatives by South African manufacturers and conservation organisations promoting the use of lead-free options. By embracing non-lead ammunition, these efforts contribute to reducing the risks posed by lead exposure to both humans and wildlife.
The aim of the Lead Task Team is to accelerate the transition from lead to non-lead ammunition, thereby promoting the health and well-being of both individuals and ecosystems.
Alternative lead-free ammunition
Availability and cost of lead-free ammunition in Africa is a challenge.
So we must all:
- Build and support local lead-free ammunition manufacturing capacity
- Participate in developing and testing
- Reduce price differential
- Motivating for reduced import tariffs
- Increasing demand
- Improve confidence in use of lead-free
Cost offset against:
- Guaranteed safety of staff, neighbours, yourself and the environment
- Guaranteed safety of wildlife
- Less waste of meat
- Less hassle
